Deciduous coniferous tree of the genus Taxodium (Taxodium) of the Cypress family (Cupressaceae). A tree with a height of 30-36 m and a trunk diameter of 0.9-3 m and even up to 5 m, at a young age with a woody trunk and a narrowly pyramidal crown; with increasing age, the trunk becomes more cylindrical, and the crown is pyramidal or widely spread.

The bark is dark red-brown 10-15 cm thick, with longitudinal deep cracks.

The roots of the tree diverging horizontally form original outgrowths - pneumatophores, they grow conical or bottle-shaped, rising 1-2 m above the level of water or swampy soil, which is extremely unusual for the family.

The leaves are pinnate, linear, with a rounded sharp tip, soft, light green, 16-18 mm long, arranged in two rows (combed) and falling annually in autumn together with shortened shoots. The cones are about 1.5-4 cm or about 2.5 cm in diameter.

Prefers swampy subtropical areas with high or high humidity. The crown of the taxodium is often entwined with its strands of the so-called Spanish moss. In autumn, the foliage of swamp cypresses acquires a rusty hue.

Instructions

1. Growing baldcypress - swamp cypress (Taxоdium distichum) from seed is a rewarding process. Follow these guidelines for best results.
2. Seed Preparation: Scarify the hard seed coat with sandpaper, then soak in warm water for 24 hours. Seeds may require a period of cold stratification before germination.
3. Sowing: Sow seeds in heavy clay soil at a depth of 2–3 cm. Submerge the container in 10–15 cm of water. Maintain water temperature at 20–25°C. Place in a sunny position.
4. Germination: Seeds may germinate over 2–8 weeks depending on species. Some conifers require a warm period (20°C for 4 weeks) followed by cold stratification before germination will occur.
5. Transplanting: Transplant seedlings into individual pots once they have 2–3 pairs of true leaves. Harden off gradually over 7–10 days before planting in final position. Space according to the mature size of the species.
6. Aftercare: Maintain water depth appropriate for the species. Remove dead leaves promptly. Fertilize sparingly with aquatic plant fertilizer during the growing season. Protect from frost — most aquatic species are not fully hardy.
7. Hardiness: Hardy in most temperate climates. Suitable for USDA zones 4–8 depending on species. Established plants can tolerate winter temperatures well below freezing.
